The story of Una and the Lion was popularized by the English poet Edmund Spenser in his epic poem “The Faerie Queene,” which was published in the late 16th century. Spenser used the story as an allegory for the triumph of virtue over vice.

This year’s design captures Una in a seated position looking forward as her left hand rests on the mane of a powerful lion that sits to her left.
