The concept behind the Lucky Angel coin design featured on these coins dates to 1792. King Louis XVI commissioned Augustine Dupre to design a new French coin and he developed the image of an angel atop a pedestal. However, Dupre was later accused of harboring revolutionary sympathies and sentenced to death. He allegedly escaped the guillotine by bribing guards with the very angel coins he designed, lending a legacy of luck to this coin design.
