The obverse of 2023 1 oz South Korean Gold Medals features a replication of a Korean gold crown. This elaborate depiction beautifully captures the intricate design and ornate quality of this historic artifact. The obverse also contains the medal’s security feature along with inscriptions reading “Gold Crown, 2023.”

The Kingdom of Silla existed from 57 BC until 935 CE, when the Korean state of Goryeo obtained power in the region. Silla was part of the Three Kingdoms of Korea, a triptych that also included Baekje and Goguryeo. The decorative crowns crafted during the Silla Dynasty were buried in chambers and later uncovered along with jewels, pottery, and other emblems of Silla’s rich culture. Six crowns have been excavated thus far, all of which are listed as Korean National Treasures.
