Introduced in 1983 with an extremely limited issue, the 1 oz Proof Silver Libertad became an annual issue in 1986 and has not missed a date mark since that time. The 1983 debut of the 1 oz Proof Silver Libertad came with an extremely limited issue of only 998 coins. There were no further issues of the Proof Silver Libertad in 1984 or 1985, but the coin returned in 1986 with total sales of 30,000 coins. As of 2023, this remains the highest single-year mintage for any weight in the Proof Silver Libertad Series.
Over the years, the Mexican Mint introduced fractional-ounce coins, 2 oz coins, 5 oz coins, and 1 Kilo coins, as well as antique and reverse-proof versions. Since 1986, the 1 oz silver coin has remained the most coveted coin in the collection. It has been released every year and is one of only three options to feature BU, Proof, Antique, and Reverse Proof versions in the program’s history.
Obverse designs on the 2023 1 oz Proof Silver Libertad include the image of the national coat of arms. The Mexican seal features a golden eagle on a prickly pear cactus as it battles with a serpent. The bottom of the field includes a wreath of oak and laurel. This is encircled by 10 historic versions of the coat of arms.
Reverse visuals on each 2023 Proof Mexican Silver Libertad feature the depiction of Winged Victory. She is shown here in a three-quarter profile as found atop the Mexican Independence Victory Column.
