Molon Labe is a classical Greek phrase that translates to “come and take it.” The phrase is associated with the Battle of Thermopylae, which King Leonidas refused to back down from after Xerxes suggested he surrender his weapons. Leonidas scoffed at the idea and issued this famous line on the eve of the Battle of Thermopylae instead. While the Spartans ultimately lost the battle, their valiant efforts inspired Greek commanders, paving the way for Persian defeat at the Battle of Plataea.
Each 2023 Molon Labe Silver Round in this JM Bullion online listing was produced by Intaglio Mint with .999 pure silver. They will arrive in brand-new condition. If you order an individual round, it will ship in a plastic flip. Alternatively, multiples of 20 will arrive in tubes.
The obverse of 2023 1 oz Molon Labe Rounds features a Spartan soldier facing off against the overwhelming Persian forces. Many of the Persians are riding atop large pachyderms as well, which only enhances their odds of victory. The Spartan is shown from behind as he wields a spear while dressed in Sparta’s classic military regalia. Inscribed across the lower rim are the words Molon Labe.
On the reverse side of these 1 oz Molon Labe Silver Rounds is the official Intaglio Mint logo. This design features a Romanesque column shaped like the letter I. The column is surrounded by a beaded pattern, concentric circles, and inscriptions of the round’s hallmarks. Also of note is that 2023 marks the first time that Intaglio has included the year of mintage in their design.
