Trade dollars were once a reliable form of currency for empires and nations trading within East Asia. Following the opening of Chinese ports by the British after the Opium Wars, the need for a stable, interchangeable currency arose. In response, several nations issued silver trade dollars. The East India Company has recently revived these design concepts on modern silver coins for sale. Today, 2023 1 oz Japanese Trade Dollar Silver Coins are available to you online at JM Bullion.

Historically, the roots of the Japanese Trade Dollar are set in the late 19th century as Japan pushed forward with a period of rapid economic expansion. The Iwakura Mission was a three-year endeavor that saw Japanese dignitaries and scholars travel the world to represent the Emperor of Japan.

On the obverse of the 2023 Japanese Trade Dollar Coin, you will find a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. With Her Majesty’s recent passing in September 2022, her portrait will soon disappear from circulation on British and Commonwealth coins. However, the Queen still features on these coins with the Jody Clark effigy from 2015. In this design, she is shown at the age of 89 wearing the George IV State Diadem Crown.
The reverse side of 2023 1 oz Japanese Trade Dollar Coins comes with a modern vision of the historic Japanese trade dollar. In this design, a powerful Japanese dragon is shown in the foreground clutching an orb in its front claw. In the background, the stylized globe is focused on the home islands of Japan.
The Japanese Trade dollar was introduced in 1874 by Imperial Japan after the 1871-1873 Iwakura Mission. The coins would be produced by the Osaka Mint from 1875 to 1877.
