The obverse of 1 oz Don’t Mess with Texas Silver Rounds features the Gonzales cannon. This six-pounder bronze weapon was originally a temporary gift from Mexico to Texas settlers in the town of Gonzales. When the settlers refused to return the cannon, a skirmish ensued that today is recognized as the event that launched the Texas Revolution. Below the design of the cannon, there is a brick carved with the year 1835, which is when the skirmish took place.
For the reverse of Don’t Mess with Texas Gonzales Cannon Silver Rounds the official series emblem is found. This logo includes a longhorn skull, the outline of Texas, and branches of oak and olive. Inscriptions of the series name and the identifying hallmarks are also found in the reverse field.
The Texas Revolution occurred from October 1835 until April of the following year. Texan rebels ultimately defeated the Mexican army and formed the Republic of Texas, which lasted until the region was annexed by the United States in 1845. Texas formally joined the Union as its 28th state on February 19, 1846. Because Mexico refused to acknowledge this annexation, another conflict arose that same year known as the Mexican-American War.
