The coin was the second in the Canadian Maple Leaf bullion series and debuted at the same time as the platinum bullion version of the coin. Traditionally, the Royal Canadian Mint issues its Canadian Silver Maple Leaf only as a 1 oz silver BU coin for investors. However, third-party organizations will complete colorizing or gilding processes on these coins after procuring them from the RCM. This helps create a collectible market for the BU version of the coin. With these coins, the 24-karat gold layer is limited to the image of the maple leaf on the reverse.
Queen Elizabeth II is on the obverse side of 2023 Canadian Silver Maple Leaf Coins. Her Majesty appears for the final time in this series following her death in September 2022. This portrait is the fourth-generation effigy for Canadian coins and was created in 2003 by Susanna Blunt.
A sugar maple leaf features in the reverse design of 2023 1 oz Silver Maple Leaf Coins. This image was created in 1979 by Walter Ott for the debut of the gold coins in the Canadian Maple Leaf Series. This depiction of the national emblem has since been featured on the silver, platinum, and palladium versions of the coin.
