The American Silver Eagle was authorized in Public Law 99-61 before arriving on the scene in 1986. The initial design featured Adolph Weinman’s 1916 Walking Liberty rendition and a heraldic eagle motif by John Mercanti, who would later become the US Mint’s Chief Engraver. Since the program’s inception, the iconic obverse design has remained unchanged. However, in 2021, a new reverse eagle design by Emily Damstra was introduced for the coin’s 35th anniversary.
A rendition of Walking Liberty appears on the obverse of 2023 American Silver Eagle Coins. As designed by Adolph Weinman, we see Lady Liberty walking towards the left in a flowing gown. In her left hand she holds branches of oak and laurels, while her right hand is extended towards the light of a brand-new day. We find inscriptions also on the obverse that read Liberty, In God We Trust, 2023.
A bald eagle is depicted on the reverse of 2023 1 oz American Silver Eagle Coins. Emily Damstra’s exquisite design showcases the eagle in flight as it holds an oak branch in its talons. Compared to Mercanti’s original heraldic motif, this design has a more stripped-down and naturalistic quality to it. Inscriptions of the coin’s hallmarks are also included on the reverse.
