From 1986 to mid-2021, the United States Mint issued American Silver Eagles with the same two designs. The obverse has always featured the Walking Liberty design from Adolph A. Weinman which was introduced in 1916 on the US Half Dollar.
On the reverse, the coins originally featured a modernized image of the heraldic eagle of the United States. This visual was created in 1986 by John Mercanti and featured on the reverse of all versions of the coin. In 2021, it was replaced by Emily Damstra’s new image of the bald eagle.
