The American Gold Eagle bullion series was the fourth such coin issued by a sovereign mint in the modern era. Its 1986 debut followed the 1967 release of Gold Krugerrands, the 1979 debut of Gold Maple Leafs, and the 1982 introduction of Gold Pandas.
When the United States Mint issued the first American Gold Eagle Coins, investors and collectors had a handful of options. These included four weights in the BU series and just one option, for the time being, in the Proof series.
Lady Liberty is on the obverse of the 2023 1 oz Gold Eagle Coin. This design is one of the oldest still in use by the United States Mint and is widely regarded as the nation’s best coin design. Created in 1907 by Augustus Saint-Gaudens, this visual shows Liberty in front-facing relief with a torch in one hand and an olive branch in the other.
An American bald eagle is featured in the reverse of the 2023 American Gold Eagle Coin. This design was created in 2020 by Jennie Norris and is new to the series. Released in mid-2021, this visual shows the head of the bald eagle in left-profile relief.
These 2023 1 oz American Gold Eagle Coins are in near-perfect condition. Coins in this condition showcase full, original mint luster with no more than two minor flaws. These flaws must be located outside the primary fields of the coin. The First Strike designation means each coin was received for grading within 30 days of release by the mint.
