When the Perth Mint introduced the Silver Kookaburra Series in 1990, the collection marked the first silver bullion series from the Western Australia-based mint. The Silver Kookaburra was first offered in 1 oz silver, with 2 oz, 10 oz, and 1 Kilo coins added to the collection in 1992.
Since the 1990 debut of the series, the Perth Mint has used a new image of the kookaburra on the reverse side each year. The effigy of the Queen used on the coins has changed several times, with the 2023 release the final one to depict Her Majesty following Elizabeth II’s passing in September 2022.
Queen Elizabeth II is on the obverse of the 2023 1 Kilo Silver Kookaburra Coin. This is the sixth-generation portrait of the Queen to grace the coins and was designed in 2015 by Jody Clark. This design shows Her Majesty at the age of 89 wearing the George IV State Diadem. Following this 2023 release, the next Silver Kookaburras will bear a portrait of King Charles III.
Two kookaburras are featured in the reverse design of 2023 Australian Silver Kookaburra Coins. This year’s exclusive design shows two of the birds perched in the branches of a waratah plant. Kookaburras are native to Australia and represent the largest member of the kingfisher species, while the waratah is also a native plant to Australia.
These 2023 1 Kilo Australian Silver Kookaburra Coins arrive in Brilliant Uncirculated condition with individual plastic capsules. The unlimited mintage means that Perth will issue the coins until its next design in the series is ready.
