The debut of Chinese Gold Panda Coins in 1982 was a significant one in the history of gold bullion coinage. At this point in time, the only other options were the South African Krugerrand and the Canadian Maple Leaf. Only the Krugerrand had 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz gold available at this point.
What neither of these existing programs had was an approach to coin designing that the Chinese Mint would adopt with the Gold Panda. While the Krugerrand and Maple Leaf have the same designs each year, the Chinese Panda has used new images of the Giant Panda each year.
For the obverse of 2023 1 Gram Gold Panda Coins, you will find the Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests. This design element features an external view of the building from the base of its entryway stairs that lead to the main doors of the building. The Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests is the central piece of the Temple of Heaven Complex.
In the reverse design of 2023 Chinese Gold Panda Coins, the mint features its latest image of Giant Pandas. This design shows one panda up in a tree as it extends a paw toward its companion standing on the ground near the trunk of the tree.
