The Proof British Gold Britannia Series is known for altering the images of Britannia on the reverse. However, the 2023 release also happens to be the first in the history of the series to feature a new obverse portrait.
With the passing of Queen Elizabeth II in September 2022, the Royal Mint has been working to replace Her Late Majesty’s effigy on its coinage. Britannia and Sovereign bullion coins already have the new Charles III effigy, and now Proof Britannias join the group.
King Charles III features on the obverse of 2023 1/4 oz Proof Gold Britannia Coins. His Majesty is shown here in left-profile relief with no crown on his head. The switch to left-profile relief is in keeping with British coining traditions, as is the lack of a crown on a male monarch’s head.
Britannia is shown in the reverse field of the 2023 Proof British Gold Commemorative Britannia Coin. This design depicts Britannia with a chariot that is driven by seahorses with a trident in her left hand. The Union Jack shield is in her right hand.
