The 2023 issue of the British Silver Britannia is a release that collectors will want to secure. Following the recent passing of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, the 2023-dated coins in this series mark both the final appearance of the effigy of the United Kingdom’s longest-serving monarch, as well as the first year with a portrait of King Charles III available on the coins. Right now, 2023 1/4 oz British Silver Britannia Coins are available at JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
Each 2023 1/4 oz British Silver Britannia Coin comes with a protective plastic flip. The Royal Mint began its 2023 bullion coin production with one final portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Following Her Majesty’s passing in September 2022, the Mint had limited time to prepare a new design. As a result, a small number of 2023 Britannias were issued with the Queen’s image before transitioning to coins featuring King Charles III.
Britannia’s iconic imagery combines Roman imperial symbolism with British national identity, each element carefully chosen to project strength and sovereignty. Her Corinthian helmet evokes classical military might and wisdom, linking Britain to the glory of ancient civilizations while suggesting vigilant defense of the realm. Her shield, often bearing the Union Jack, serves as both protective barrier and proud display of national unity, while the trident—borrowed from Neptune, god of the seas—boldly proclaims Britain’s naval supremacy and mastery over the waves.
The obverse of the 2023 British Silver Britannia features one of two possible designs. Early in 2023, the mint issued the coins one final time with Jody Clark’s fifth-generation portrait of Queen Elizabeth II in right-profile relief. This portrait depicts Her Majesty at the age of 89, wearing the George IV State Diadem. Most of the 2023 release included coins with Martin Jennings’ new effigy of King Charles III, a left-profile relief that depicts the king without a crown.
On the reverse, the 2023 1/4 oz Silver Britannia Coin features Philip Nathan’s classic 1987 depiction of Britannia. She stands with a trident in one hand, a Union Jack shield in the other, and wears a Corinthian helmet, representing strength and maritime heritage.
