The Mexican Mint was established in 1535 by a royal decree from King Charles V of Spain. It was the first mint established in the Americas and served as a branch of the Spanish Royal Mint. The purpose of the mint was to produce coins from the vast amounts of silver and gold that were being extracted from the mines in Mexico.
The original mint building was constructed in Mexico City. It was a significant architectural landmark of its time and served as a symbol of Spanish colonial power. The mint's design and construction were overseen by Spanish architect Alonso de Vandelvira. Today, the Mexican Mint remains the oldest-operating mint in the Americas.
