Fans of the Gold Britannia Series have become accustomed to a singular monarch featuring on the obverse of the coins. From the 1987 debut issue until the 2022 releases, the coins were known to feature Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse each year. However, following her death in September 2022, The Royal Mint faced the reality of featuring a different monarch on these beloved coins for the first time in program history. The Late Queen would make one more appearance on coins issued in early 2023 though. Now, 2023 1/2 oz British Gold Britannia Coins in certified condition are available online from JM Bullion.

The passing of Queen Elizabeth II brought a lot of change to the bullion coin market. Nations such as Britain, Canada, and Australia faced the prospect of developing new monarch portraits for King Charles III starting in 2023. For each nation and coin program, it marked the first time in history that a monarch other than Queen Elizabeth II graced the coins.
Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II was a record-setting monarch for England. Her long reign saw the nation undergo several cultural and political changes, including in her role as monarch. As a constitutional monarch, Elizabeth served as the Head of State for the United Kingdom and 14 other Commonwealth realms. She played a crucial symbolic and ceremonial role but did not wield direct political power.
For the obverse of 2023 1/2 oz Gold Britannia Coins, you’ll find the fifth-generation portrait of Elizabeth II. The Queen is shown here in right-profile relief with the George IV State Diadem on her head. This effigy was designed in 2015 by Jody Clark and debuted on British coins in 2016.
In the reverse design of 2023 British Gold Britannias, Philip Nathan’s iconic bust of Britannia continues to feature on the coins. Designed in 1987, it shows the full-length figure of Britannia wearing a Corinthian helmet with a trident in one hand and an olive branch in the other. Holding the olive branch, her left hand rests on the Union Jack shield.
These 2023 1/2 oz British Gold Britannia Coins are perfect specimens. Mint State 70 coins showcase full, original mint luster with no flaws. The NGC certifies these coins are among the last 500 2023 Britannias struck by The Royal Mint with Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse.
