When the South African Mint and Rand Refinery introduced the Gold Krugerrand in 1967, the coins were only available in 1 oz gold. The coins were the only gold bullion coins of their kind available on a global basis and would remain the only coins in the market until 1979 when the Canadian Maple Leaf debuted in gold.

The former President of the South African Republic was a member of the triumvirate that oversaw the Cape Colony before the establishment of the independent South African Republic. He would later serve four terms as president.
Reverse depictions on 2023 1/10 oz Gold Krugerrand Coins offer a glimpse of the Springbok antelope. This design shows the full body of the Springbok in right-profile relief with a vision of its natural habitat in the background field.
