With her passing in September 2022, the Queen will no longer feature on British or Commonwealth coinage. However, mints around the world are not prepared with King Charles III effigies for coinage. As such, the Royal Canadian Mint introduces the 2023 Canadian Maple Leaf with Queen Elizabeth II’s effigy for one final time.
Queen Elizabeth II is on the obverse of 2023 1/10 oz Gold Maple Leaf Coins for a final time. This 2003 portrait of the Queen was created by Susanna Blunt as the fourth-generation effigy of Her Majesty and was the first of her reign to lack a crown.
The sugar maple leaf features on the reverse of 2023 Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Coins. This design was created in 1979 by Walter Ott and has featured on all of the coins in the series. The sugar maple leaf is the most common of its species in North America and is the national emblem of Canada.
