The 2023 Platinum Britannia now features the effigy of King Charles III on the obverse for the first time in its history. While gold and silver Britannias were offered early in the 2021 release schedules with Her Late Majesty’s effigy one final time, the 2023 Platinum Britannias are offered only with the portrait of King Charles III.
The obverse side of each 2023 British Platinum Britannia Coin features a left-profile bust of His Majesty King Charles III. The first portrait of his reign, this design from Martin Jennings captures the new monarch without a crown on his head and sets his bust in opposing orientation to the previous monarch, his mother Queen Elizabeth II.
On the reverse of 2023 1/10 oz Platinum Britannia Coins is the beloved effigy of Britannia. Created in 1987 by Philip Nathan, this full-length depiction of Britannia with a trident in one hand and an olive branch in the other as she clutches a shield has featured on all BU Britannia specimens since 1987.
