After a brief production period in early 2023 with the final Queen Elizabeth II Britannias, The Royal Mint introduced these coins with King Charles III on the obverse.

The figure of Britannia first appeared on Roman coins during Emperor Hadrian’s reign in 119 AD, but her most significant debut on British coinage came in 1672 during the reign of Charles II. The design was reportedly modeled after Frances Teresa Stuart, Duchess of Richmond and Lennox, who was known for her beauty and had caught the king’s attention. On these first British copper halfpennies, Britannia was depicted seated facing left, holding a spear, with her left arm resting on a shield decorated with the Union Flag.

The obverse of the 2023 British Gold Britannia Coins features King Charles III. Designed by Martin Jennings in late 2022, this portrait of the new King of England presents a left-profile relief of His Majesty, making its debut on British Britannia coins with this release.

The reverse side of 2023 1/10 oz Gold Britannia Coins displays the iconic Britannia design. Created in 1987 by Philip Nathan, this artwork captures Britannia, the female personification of the United Kingdom, in a commanding front-facing pose as she gazes to her right. This design is shared across the Gold, Silver, and Platinum Britannia collections, reflecting its enduring legacy.
