For most of its history, the Gold Britannia Series has been struck with just one monarch featured on the obverse. Following the passing of Queen Elizabeth II in September 2022, The Royal Mint eventually moved to introduce coins with King Charles III on the obverse, a first in the program’s history. Before this happened, early batches of 2023 coins were struck with Her Majesty’s effigy one final time. Right now, certified-perfect 2023 1/10 oz British Gold Britannia Coins are available from JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
Each 2023 1/10 oz British Gold Britannia Coin is available here in perfect condition. Mint State 70 coins exhibit full, original mint luster and have no detracting flaws present. These coins have been identified as among the last 500 coins The Royal Mint struck in the 2023 Britannia Series.
The Royal Mint’s Britannia Series had never known another monarch on the obverse prior to 2023. Queen Elizabeth II featured on all gold coins from 1987 to 2022 and all silver coins from 1997 to 2022. In total, five different effigies of Her Majesty appeared on the coins. In honor of the monarch, Her Majesty appeared for a final time early in 2023 before The Royal Mint introduced its new King Charles III portrait.
The obverse of the 2023 British Gold Britannia comes with the final effigy of Her Majesty. This 2015 design from Jody Clark is the fifth overall effigy of Elizabeth II and it depicts the Queen in right-profile relief at the age of 89. She is shown here wearing the George IV State Diadem Crown on her head.
On the reverse of 2023 1/10 oz Gold Britannia Coin, you will find Philip Nathan’s historic image of Britannia. Created in 1987, it depicts Britannia’s full-length figure wearing a Corinthian helmet on her head. She holds a trident in her right hand as a symbol of Britain’s dominance of the seas and rests her left hand on a Union Jack shield as a symbol of her defense of the home islands.
