The history of the Purple Heart dates to 1782 when George Washington established the Badge of Military Merit. Historians believe only three soldiers in the Revolutionary War actually received this honor. On February 22nd, 1932, General Douglas MacArthur signed General Order # 3, which created the modern version of the Purple Heart. On December 3rd, 1942, President Roosevelt announced that all five branches of the military were eligible to receive the medal.
