The Royal Mint is moving into a new era with its Gold Sovereign Coins. For the first time in the modern history of this series, a new monarch will appear on the obverse of the coin. The Memorial Sovereign range in 2022 honors the passing of Queen Elizabeth II and the ascension of King Charles III to the throne. Each of the 2022 Proof British Gold Memorial Sovereign Coins available here comes with individual packaging. The coins are housed in presentation boxes and come with a Certificate of Authenticity. The Royal Mint has a maximum mintage of 23,160 coins in the Proof Gold Memorial Sovereign release, with only 17,500 available in these individual boxes.
The new 2022 Proof British Gold Memorial Sovereign marks a transitional era for the Sovereign program. These particular 2022 Memorial Sovereigns abandon the use of Benedetto Pistrucci’s reverse design for a memorial Royal Arms design to honor Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. On the obverse, King Charles III makes his debut on the coins of the Sovereign Series.
King Charles III appears on the obverse of 2022 Proof Gold Memorial Sovereign Coins in a new portrait from Martin Jennings. This left-profile relief shows the new monarch without a crown, in keeping with the custom for male monarch portraits.
The Royal Arms is on the reverse of 2022 Proof British Memorial Sovereign Coins. This design comes from Jody Clark, the same man who created Her Majesty’s final portrait for British coinage. This design shows the coat of arms of the United Kingdom supported by the Lion of England and the Unicorn of Scotland.
