British Gold Sovereigns were introduced in 1817 as a successor to the historic English sovereigns of the 15th century. The coins were regularly issued from 1817 to World War II. In the 1950s, Gold Sovereigns returned to production.
Modern Gold Sovereigns have only featured portraits of Queen Elizabeth II since being reintroduced. With the Queen’s passing in September 2022, the Royal Mint now marks the transition of the series with Memorial Sovereigns that introduce King Charles III to the series.
King Charles III is on the obverse of 2022 Proof British Gold Memorial Quarter Sovereign Coins. This left-profile portrait was created by Martin Jennings with no crown on the King’s head. The flip to left-profile relief maintains the tradition of switching orientations for each monarch, while the lack of a crown is in line with the effigies of previous male monarchs.
The Royal Arms is found in the reverse design of 2022 Proof Gold Memorial Quarter Sovereign Coins. Jody Clark created this design in honor of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and reflects one created for her Platinum Jubilee in the summer of 2022. The design shows the coat of arms of the United Kingdom supported by the Lion of England and the Unicorn of Scotland.
