Iconic Designs
Since the debut of the Mexican Libertad coins in the 1980s, the series from the Mexican Mint has offered the same design concepts on the obverse and reverse fields of the coins. The obverse side of 2022 1 oz Mexican Silver Libertad Coins (for example) includes the Mexican coat of arms. The national seal consists of a Mexican golden eagle in left-profile relief. The eagle is perched on a prickly pear cactus with its wings raised as it uses its talons and beak to battle a serpent. All coins have this design, along with an oak-and-laurel wreath and an inscription of the nation of issue above.
For select weights in the series, notably the 1 oz, 2 oz, 5 oz, and 1 Kilo coins in silver and the 1 oz gold coin, you will find an additional design element on the obverse. These coins have a ring around the boundary of the obverse field that includes 10 historic versions of the coat of arms of Mexico.
On the reverse side of coins like the 2022 1 oz Mexican Gold Libertad Coin, you will find the image of Winged Victory. This iconic symbol is based on the ancient goddess Victoria, also known as Nike, and features slight-left-profile relief on the obverse field. She is depicted with powerful wings, a laurel wreath in her right hand, and a set of broken chains in her left hand. Her statuesque figure is shown at the top of the Mexican Independence Victory Column with the mountains of Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl in the background.
2022 Gold Libertads

History of the Series
Mexican Libertad coins were first issued in 1 oz weights in both metals in the 1980s. The Gold Libertad debuted first in 1981, followed by the Silver Libertad in 1982. The 21st century has seen far greater stability in the series with reliable, annual offerings. The Silver Libertad does also come in Reverse Proof and Antique finishes, with Reverse Proof coins not yet available in 2022 and the Antique coins suspended as of 2019.
