In 1817, the sovereign and half sovereign returned to production and circulation. The Great Recoinage of 1816 brought about new Great Britain Gold Sovereigns and Half Sovereigns. The coins were issued for circulation use with new design concepts through 1926. While half sovereigns no longer circulated in Britain after 1926, they continued to see extensive use in Australia through 1933. In 1980, the half sovereign made its debut in the gold bullion Sovereign Series.
Queen Elizabeth II is on the obverse of 2022 Great Britain Gold 1/2 Sovereign Coins. The design was created in 2015 by Jody Clark and is the fifth-generation portrait of Her Majesty to grace British coinage. The design shows the Queen at the age of 89 wearing the George IV State Diadem, a piece from the Crown Jewels.
