While the Perth Mint is well known for its range of commemorative and collectible bullion coins, it is the range of annual issues from Perth that attract the most attention each year. Among the most sought-after coins from Perth Mint is the annual Australian Koala issue. Introduced in 2007, Perth Silver Koalas have been released with new reverse designs each year and have more recently increased the fineness of the coins from .999 to .9999 pure silver content. The latest issue is now out in 2022 and does not disappoint with yet another new reverse design.
The 2022 Reverse Design
On the reverse side of the 2022 1 oz Australian Silver Koala Coins from Perth Mint, you will find a depiction of the koala doing what it does best. These members of the marsupial family are infamous for sleeping for as many as 18 to 20 hours per day. Koalas primarily consume eucalyptus leaves in their diet and will lounge in the canopy of the gum trees. In this design, the koala is shown lying on a branch in a gum tree with its eyes closed as it takes one of its many daily naps. The koala is securely clinging to the branch with two of its paws as it sleeps, though the other two are just dangling freely beneath the branch.
Queen Elizabeth II Obverse Design
The obverse design of 2022 Australian Silver Koalas features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty is shown here in a design that began to feature on Perth Mint coins in 2018, following its 2015 design by Jody Clark and its 2016 release on British coins. The portrait is the sixth-generation effigy of the Queen on Australian coins and the first one since 1966 to include Her Majesty’s shoulders in the portrait field. In this design, the Queen is aged 89 and wears the George IV State Diadem with earrings and a necklace.
2022 Release Details
The 1 oz Australian Silver Koala Coin is the primary issue in the series and is the only coin in the collection’s history that has been offered every year since 2007. The 1 oz silver coins come in protective plastic capsules for individual coins. Multiples of 20 coins are sealed together in rolls of 20, with boxes available for multiples of 100 coins. The box holds a total of five sealed rolls of 20 coins together. The coins have .9999 pure silver content and are legal tender in Australia. The mintage is once again capped at 300,000 coins for 2022.
History
The Australian Silver Koala was introduced in 2007 by Perth Mint. The series debuted that first year with only a 1 oz silver coin available and has previously featured 10 oz and 1/2 oz silver coins that are no longer available in the series. The modern Australian Silver Koala features only 1 oz and 1 Kilo silver coin each year. The 2022 design in the collection comes from Ing Ing Jong, one of Perth Mint’s finest designers. She has worked for the mint since 2011 and has been a primary contributor to the Lunar Series coin releases since 2013.
