Aphrodite was worshiped across the ancient Greek world as a goddess of love and lust, pleasure and passion, beauty and procreation. She represented the delights that made life worth living, but in the ancient poet Hesiod’s Theogony she was also born from warfare, rising from sea foam after a clash between the Titans Ouranos and Kronos, and she could represent the violent side of passion and the excesses to which it could drive men and gods alike. This complicated goddess was an influential presence in countless stories and is celebrated today by the Perth Mint’s 2022 5 oz Antique Tuvalu Gods of Olympus Aphrodite Silver Coin.

One of the most iconic themes of Western art is the image of the goddess Aphrodite’s birth, emerging fully-fledged from the sea foam, which has been repeated in countless paintings and sculptures over the centuries. The sixth release in the Gods of Olympus series provides a beautiful high-relief take on this theme, with a gorgeous antiqued finish that accentuates every detail in engraved artwork where Aphrodite is surrounded by creatures of the sea just as she often is in myth, the scene thronging with gulls and fish and mollusks and dolphins and a swan spreading its wings in the foreground.
The 2022 Antique Tuvalu Gods of Olympus Aphrodite Silver Coin sports comes in a themed box inside a secure plastic capsule. Every shipment is tracked and fully insured against loss or damage, and the mintage is extremely exclusive, with only fifty pieces available worldwide.
The obverse side of the coin features Ian Rank-Broadley’s famous effigy of the late Queen Elizabeth II to confirm it as legal tender of Tuvalu. It’s accompanied by the inscriptions “5 oz 9999 Ag,” “2022,” “TUVALU,” “5 DOLLARS,” and “QUEEN ELIZABETH II.”
The coin’s reverse side shows a rich design of Aphrodite in her flowing robes, a dove perched on one hand and surrounded by sea creatures as she emerges from the waves. This is accompanied by the inscription “APHRODITE.”
