The seminal fantasy author J.R.R. Tolkien drew on real-life places for many of the iconic locations in Middle Earth. One of them was Stromboli Island off the Sicilian coast, one of the world's most active volcanoes, known for its regular eruptions. In adapting The Lord of the Rings for the big screen, Peter Jackson's production team cast New Zealand's spectacular Mount Ngaurahoe in the role of Mount Doom, the closest local equivalent to the oppressive and threatening atmosphere of the volcano in the books.
