The Pisa Cathedral’s free-standing bell tower was a victim of part of its foundation sinking into unstable subsoil after its construction started, and was a “leaning” tower long before it was finally completed in 1372. For parts of its history, it was leaning too dramatically for tourists to safely enter until a 2008 restoration project reduced its tilt to just under four degrees. The Leaning Tower has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1987.
The obverse side features an ultra high-relief sculpture of the tower and stylizes the Pisa Cathedral’s front view as a background, joined by the inscriptions “Leaning Tower of Pisa,” “1372 – 2022” and “650 years.”
The reverse side is dominated by its own ultra high-relief artwork of the Leaning Tower, with the Pisa Cathedral in a profile view in the backdrop. Unusually, Queen Elizabeth II’s profile portrait is present only in small form as a design accent, along with the inscriptions “Queen Elizabeth II,” “Cook Islands” and “10 dollars.”
