The invasion of Ukraine was met with a world-wide condemnation and a comprehensive package of economic and humanitarian sanctions from the international community, but nothing shocked the invaders like the spirited resistance from within Ukraine itself. Still ongoing and with no sign of breaking the devotion of Ukrainians to fighting for their homeland’s sovereignty and freedom, the invasion has produced countless flashpoints of astonishingly courageous resistance. One of the most famous of these thus far took place at the Metallurgical Combine Azovstal during the Siege of Mariupol, celebrated by the 2022 2 oz Antique Niue Silver Warrior of Azovstal Coin.

During the latter days of the Siege of Mariupol, Ukrainian soldiers put up a bitter resistance from inside the city’s sprawling Azovstal steelworks. Low on ammunition, virtually without communications and surrounded by a massive force of Russian invaders, the defenders were holdouts in a city reduced to rubble whose remaining survivors were holed up in bunkers below ground. Like so many battles in the invasion, it looked as though the Russians should be able to finish the defenders quickly: but supported by airdrops from their Ukrainian compatriots and allies abroad, the resistance in Azovstal persisted heroically for eighty days, bogging down the Russian advance.
This achievement in the face of overhwelming odds is commemorated by the 2022 Antique Niue Silver Warrior of Azovstal Coin. Featuring high-relief sculptural artwork whose fine details are brought out by an antiqued fiinish, it’s available in an exclusive limited mintage and comes in a presentation case with custom box packaging. Each piece comes with a Certificate of Authenticity and ships fully insured by the team at JM Bullion.
Niue’s coat of arms appears on the coin’s obverse side, along with decorative touches that mimic the bullet holes and metal tearing that became signature visuals in the assault on Azovstal. This is surrounded at the rim by the inscriptions “NIUE ISLAND,” “5 DOLLARS,” ,”2 oz,” “2022,” and “Ag 999.”
A symbolic image of the Warrior of Azovstal, representing the resistance effort, features on the reverse. Subtly colorized and styled like a medieval warrior whose armor carries deeply-detailed engraved imagery of the steelworks, the image is set against a red background with touches of white and black and accompanied by the inscription “WARRIOR OF AZOVSTAL.”
