The Vendel Period in Sweden stretched from roughly 540 AD to 790 AD, following the Migration Period after the fall of the Roman Empire in mainland Europe and the rise of the Viking Age in 800 AD. During this period, very few precious metals were used in Viking artwork, armor, and weaponry. However, the period was rich in animal art and ornate designs on copper-alloy weaponry and armor.
