According to most accounts, Silla was founded around 57 BC by the monarch Pak Hyokkose. Located in the southern and central parts of the Korean peninsula, Silla had an established hereditary monarchy and distinguished aristocratic class. The wealth of this class is evidenced by the fact that numerous jewels and gold crowns have been excavated from burial sites by archeologists. Silla would ultimately unite the three kingdoms of Korea under the Unified Silla Dynasty in 668. The other kingdoms were Koguryo and Paekche.
The obverse of 2022 South Korean Gold Crown Medal features the gold crown from the Seobongchong tomb. This crown is considered Korean national treasure number 339 and features five branches extending off the frame. The obverse also contains a latent security device that will feature alternating images as you tilt the medal back and forth. There is also an inscription reading Gold Crown, 2022.
On the reverse side of 2022 1 oz Gold Crown Medal there is a depiction of the mythical creature known as Samjok-o. Also known as the three-legged crow, this creature was known to inhabit the sun in many South Korean myths and legends. The reverse also contains inscriptions along the edge that read 1 oz Republic of Korea, Komsco, Fine Gold .999.
