Krugerrand coins prominently feature a portrait of Paul Kruger. Kruger served as president of the South African Republic (Transvaal) from 1883 to 1900 and became a central figure in Afrikaner nationalism and resistance to British imperial expansion. His leadership during the tense period leading up to the Second Boer War (1899-1902) made him a symbol of Boer independence and defiance against British colonial ambitions in southern Africa.
The obverse of the 2022 1 oz South African Silver Krugerrand Coin features a portrait of Paul Kruger, the former President of the South African Republic. This design has appeared on Krugerrand coins since their introduction in 1967 and was originally created in the 1890s for use on South African Pound coinage.
On the reverse side, the coin depicts the Springbok antelope, a national symbol of South Africa. This image has been part of South African coinage since the 1930s and shows the animal moving gracefully across the plains.
