The full, hairy mane of the lion is intricately detailed in the design on this face as the massive creature stares off toward the distance. The national coat of arms of South Africa features beneath the image of the African lion.
For the reverse field of 2022 1 oz Big Five Series II Lion Silver Coins, the South African Mint features the image of two lions. Just as the original series did, this design element features the faces of two lions so close together that they seem to share a mane.
