Somalia Elephant Series coins are a product of the Bavarian State Mint, one of Germany’s five major mint locations. A state-owned entity of the Free State of Bavaria, the Bavarian State Mint issues the Somalia Elephant bullion coins in gold, silver, and platinum. The coins were originally available in gold and silver for Zambia from 1999 to 2003 before switching to Somalia as the nation of issue in 2004. In 2016, a platinum bullion coin was introduced into the series with only a 1 oz option available to investors.
For the obverse design of 2022 Somalia Gold Elephant Coins, the mint features the Somali coat of arms. This image features a crowned shield with a background field of horizontal lines. At the center of the field is a single star, just as featured on the Somali flag. The design element includes leopards supporting the shield with spears and fern leaves crossed beneath the design shield.
In the reverse field of 2022 1 oz Gold Elephant Coins is a depiction of the African bush elephant. The mint famously uses a new depiction of the African elephant, with the 2022 design depicting an adult elephant walking along the savannas of Africa with its young calf at its side.
