This collection launched in 2008 with the depiction of the mystical, powerful gorilla. In the years since, the reverse designs have changed each year to feature well-known animals like the elephant, lion, and zebra, as well as some more obscure species from the continent, such as impala, bushbaby, and okapi. In 2022, the pelican is the featured species.

On the obverse of 2022 Rwandan Pelican Silver Coins is an image of the national coat of arms of Rwanda. The nation is formally known as the Republic of Rwanda and the national seal features a traditional basket at its center. This is flanked by branches of coffee and sorghum, with a cogwheel behind the basket and warrior shields on either side of the design field. The sun is featured above the seal.
The reverse side of 2022 1 oz Pelican Silver Coins features two pelicans near a small marsh. This design element incorporates the two pelicans in the lower-left field, with the now-common visual of the African continent filling the rest of the background field.
