The Gothic Revival period of the 18th and 19th centuries saw a return to the picturesque Medieval architectural styles. This included elaborate vertical framing, spires, and gargoyles. The movement extended to other mediums as well, such as the literary works of Victor Hugo and Sir Walter Scott. It also formed the basis for the Gothic Crown coin of 1847. While William Wyon worked on the coin’s portrait, its reverse design came courtesy of Scottish artist William Dyce. You need only hold the ornate cruciform imagery beside the neo-Gothic artwork of the time to see its clear influence on this incredible coin.
When you purchase 2022 St. Helena Gold Gothic Crown Coins from JM Bullion, you will receive a beautiful specimen housed inside a protective capsule and a display box. Each coin comes with its own Certificate of Authenticity, as well as an informative booklet about the coin and its history.
The obverse of 2022 1 oz Proof Gold Gothic Crown Coins features Queen Elizabeth II. This portrait was designed by Jody Clark in 2015. At the time, he was the youngest designer to have a portrait chosen for Royal coinage. Along the rim are the words Elizabeth II, D G Regina F D, St. Helena, Five Pounds.
On the reverse field of the 2022 Proof St. Helena Gold Gothic Crown Coin is a stunning recreation of the original Gothic Crown design. This includes a cruciform image of the four shields of the Royal coat of arms, as well as the Order of the Garter arms in the center. In the background, we see floral patterns representing the flowers of the four nations of the United Kingdom. The border features the Latin inscription tueatur unita deus anno dom mdcccxlvii, which translates as May God Guard these United Kingdoms, Year of Our Lord 1847.
