William “Mack” Brazel was inspecting his sheep pasture one day in the summer of 1947 when he came upon some highly unusual debris. This included rubber strips, tin foil, and broken wood beams. Brazel drove to Roswell, which was about 75 miles away, and reported his findings to Sheriff Wilcox. The sheriff then passed the information along to the Roswell Army Airfield, where intelligence officers declared the debris to be part of a flying disc. This was on July 8th, 1947. The next day, they refracted their statement and said the debris belonged to a simple weather balloon. This opened the floodgates for conspiracy theories, which continue to be debated by UFO fans to this day.
