Chief Mountain exists on the eastern border of Blackfeet Nation and Glacier National Park. For the Blackfeet tribe, this mountain, which they call Nínaiistáko, is considered sacred. Sweetgrass ceremonies and various rituals are commonly held at the base, while more important ceremonies occur at the mountain’s peak. There are also numerous burial sites located along the mountain’s base. According to some Native American oral traditions, a deity will appear at the end of days atop the mountain before departing and causing its destruction.
