William Wyon’s name is synonymous with excellence itself. The celebrated Chief Engraver of the Royal Mint from 1828 until 1851, Wyon is responsible for many of the most memorable coin designs in history. While his Young Head effigy of Queen Victoria from 1838 garnered significant praise, it was his Gothic Crown portrait of 1847 that revealed his true capabilities. Despite the fact that he favored the simplicity of neo-classism, his ability to abandon that style for the elaborate Medieval aesthetic of the Gothic Crown indicated his impressive range as an engraver.
Each 2022 1 oz St. Helena Silver Gothic Crown Portrait Coin in this online listing has been produced by The East India Company in collaboration with St. Helena, where they hold legal tender status. Upon arrival, these coins will be housed in an original mint presentation case. A Certificate of Authenticity is also included.
The obverse of 2022 Proof St. Helena Silver Gothic Crown Portrait Coins features Queen Elizabeth II. In this popular 2015 portrait by Jody Clark, we see the Queen facing right and wearing the George IV State Diadem. Extending across the rim are inscriptions that read Elizabeth II, D G Regina F D, St. Helena, 2022, 1 Pound.
On the reverse side of the 2022 1 oz Proof St. Helena Gothic Crown Portrait Coin we see an effigy of Queen Victoria. This remastered version of the Wyon original depicts Her Majesty in left-profile relief wearing an embroidered dress and the St. Edward’s crown. Blackletter script along the edge reads Victoria dei gratia britannia reg f d.
