William Wyon was the Chief Engraver at the Royal Mint from 1928 until his death in 1851. Throughout his illustrious career, he produced many incredible works, including the Three Graces, Una and the Lion, and the Young Head portrait of Queen Victoria. That portrait of Her Majesty would prove to be the inspiration for the Gothic Crown portrait, which presented the Queen in an ornate style inspired by the Gothic Revival of the time.
The obverse of 2022 1 oz Proof St. Helena Gothic Crown Portrait Coins features Queen Elizabeth II. Royal Mint engraver Jody Clark is responsible for this effigy, which depicts the Queen wearing both the Coronation Necklace and the George IV State Diadem. Inscriptions along the rim read Elizabeth II, D G Regina F D, St. Helena, 2022, 5 Pounds.
On the reverse face of 2022 1 oz Proof Gold Gothic Crown Portrait Coins, there is a remastered version of the Gothic Crown portrait. In this spectacular design, Queen Victoria is shown in left-profile relief wearing the St. Edward’s crown with her hair fashioned in a looped plait. She also wears an embroidered dress featuring the different flowers of Great Britain. Around the rim, you will find medieval Blackletter inscriptions reading Victoria dei gratia britannia reg f d.
