The Gaspee Affair was a major event in the lead-up to the American Revolution, an act of protest against British taxes that took place a year before the Boston Tea Party. It involved the HMS Gaspee, a British customs schooner commanded by the reportedly overzealous Lieutenant William Duddington; the Lieutenant was notorious for detaining ships and confiscating cargoes without charge, perhaps in an event to harass a widespread protest group called the Sons of Liberty. Eventually, in 1772, the Gaspee ran aground near the village of Warwick and was subsequently attacked by over fifty men, who captured its crew and set the ship afire.
