The world-renown Perth Mint is one of the world’s leading producers of bullion collectibles. As part of its second Lunar coin series, the Mint struck a pure gold coin to celebrate the Year of the Tiger in 2022, part of a continuing series of beautiful coins commemorating signs of the Chinese Zodiac. In Chinese folkloric tradition, the Tiger is considered the King of the Jungle, associated with vigor and ambition, courage, enthusiasm, and generosity. It’s generally expected that people born in a Tiger year will be committed to the greater good and to justice, self-confident, and passionately committed in matters of personal relationships. The fierce Tiger is featured on the 2022 1 oz Australian Gold Lunar Tiger Coin, now available in a flawless Mint State 70 grade from JM Bullion.

Chinese myth tells of a story in which the Jade Emperor, ruler of Heaven, determined the order of the animals in the Zodiac with a footrace. Though Tiger’s vigor and speed seem to make him a favorite, he would up placing third behind the cunning stratagems of Rat and the diligence of Ox. In keeping with his majesty and goodness, however, Tiger accepted his third-place finish with grace, and is now the third in the cycle of years celebrated by the lunar calendar.
The 2022 Australian Gold Lunar Tiger Coin celebrates this astrological tradition with a beautiful design in Mint State 70 grade, which indicates a perfect-quality coin without visible flaws even at five-time magnification. It comes in a protective plastic slab with labeling indicating the certification of that grade by either the coin graders of NGC (the Numismatic Guaranty Company) or PCGS (Professional Coin Grading Service).
The coin’s obverse side features Queen Elizabeth II in the so-called Fifth Portrait effigy designed by Jody Clark, surrounded by inscriptions of her name and the coin’s face value, year of issue, purity, and weight.
This reverse features a tiger on a peak with its roaring head pointed toward its tail, along with the Chinese character for “Tiger,” the lettering “TIGER 2022,” and the Perth Mint’s “P” mint mark.
