The release of the 2022 American Gold Eagle marks the first year that the US Mint released only the new Jennie Norris design on the reverse. 2021 saw the United States Mint split the release of Gold Eagles with the first half of the year featuring the old design and the latter half of the year depicting this new design. All 2022 1 oz American Gold Eagles arrive in an NGC protective plastic slab. This coin is graded MS70 by the NGC indicating a perfect specimen with no detractions and a coin with its full, original mint luster.
The obverse of 2022 American Gold Eagles features a depiction of Liberty. This image was designed in 1907 by Augustus Saint-Gaudens and it was first used on the $20 Gold Double Eagle until 1933. Liberty is seen in front-facing relief as she walks toward the viewer holding a torch in one hand and an olive branch in the other. The U.S. Capitol building is at her feet with sun rays and a ring of stars in the background.
The new Jennie Norris design is located on the reverse of 2022 1 oz Gold Eagles. This new design showcases the detailed head of an American bald eagle in left-profile relief. The image features the initials of Jennie Norris and is surrounded by identifying marks of the coin.
The 1 oz gold weight of American Eagle Coins is the most popular of all the gold weights in this series. Mintages for 1 oz gold have eclipsed 1 million six different times, most recently in 2010. The 2022 version marks the first year that Miley Busiek’s design isn’t featured on the reverse.
