Mint State 69 coins exhibit full, original mint luster and come with a maximum of two minor detracting flaws. Examples of acceptable flaws at this grade level include only minuscule contact marks or hairlines and these must be located outside of the primary focal points of the coin. Early Release specimens are those the NGC received from the US Mint for certification within 30 days of release.

The new reverse design on the American Gold Eagle debuted in mid-2021 as part of the 35th-anniversary celebration of the series. In 2022, the new reverse design of the bald eagle takes over as the primary reverse design to feature on the coins going forward into the future.

On the obverse of 2022 American Gold Eagles is the historic depiction of Lady Liberty. This full-length depiction of Liberty shows her figure in front-facing relief as she walks toward the viewer holding up a torch in her right hand and carrying an olive branch in her left hand. She is framed in the background by sun rays while a ring of 50 stars encircles the design element.

The reverse side of the 2022 1 oz American Gold Eagle comes with an image of a bald eagle’s head. This new design from Jennie Norris offers a real-life depiction of the Eagle in left-profile relief. The new design comes with incredible levels of detail capturing the physical characteristics of the bird.
