The original Australian Florin was struck in sterling silver, this two-shilling coin featured King Edward VII’s portrait on the obverse and was produced by the Royal Mint in Melbourne, reflecting Australia’s emerging national identity and economic independence. The coin was based on the British florin, which was first introduced in 1847 during Queen Victoria’s reign, was a groundbreaking silver coin representing two shillings in the pre-decimal monetary system.
All 2022 1/4 oz Australian Platinum Florin Coins offered here come with a protective plastic flip. These coins are the third in the Perth Mint’s modern Florin program. In 2021, Perth Mint issued a 2 oz silver coin and a 1/4 oz gold coin. This 2022 release marks the first-ever Platinum Florin issue.
On the obverse of 2022 Australian Platinum Florins, you’ll find the sixth-generation effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II for Australian coins. Designed in 2015 by Jody Clark, this effigy depicts Elizabeth II in right-profile relief with the George IV State Diadem Crown on her head.
The reverse side of 2022 1/4 oz Platinum Florin Coins comes with the original 1910 design of the national coat of arms. The Australian coat of arms, officially granted in 1912, is a powerful heraldic symbol representing the nation’s unique fauna and federal unity. Featuring a golden kangaroo and an emu on either side of a shield, the design symbolizes a country moving forward, as these native animals are physiologically unable to move backward easily. The shield depicts the badges of the six states, while a seven-pointed Commonwealth Star above represents the six states and one territory, embodying Australia’s federal structure and national pride.
