Coin Highlights:
Each of the 2022 1/4 oz Australian Gold Florin Coins offered here come in protective plastic flips. The coins were issued to honor the historic use of the florin both in England and in Australia. The florin was first adopted in England in 1344 during the reign of King Edward III and were late used in Australia from 1910 to 1963, with decimalization in 1966 ending the use of the florin in circulation.
The original introduction of the florin in England was part of Edward III’s ambitious attempt to create an international currency that could compete with the highly successful Florentine florin. This gold coin, officially valued at six shillings, featured Edward III seated on his throne on the obverse and a distinctive decorative cross on the reverse. Despite the king’s intentions, the English florin failed to gain widespread acceptance in international trade and was minted for less than a year before being replaced by the noble.
In the obverse design of 2022 Australian Gold Florins, the mint features a portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The design element was created by Jody Clark and was the final portrait of Elizabeth II featured on English, Australian, and Commonwealth coinage. This right-profile effigy shows Her Majesty with the George IV State Diadem.
On the reverse side of 2022 1/4 oz Gold Florin Coins, you’ll find the coat of arms of Australia. The national seal features the national shield with a kangaroo and emu supporting the shield from either side. Above the shield is a Commonwealth star. The commemorative date of 1910, the first issue of Australian florins, features on this side, as well as the historic value of One Floriin – Two Shillings.
