Gold American Eagles were introduced by the United States Mint in 1986. When the coins debuted, a historic image of Lady Liberty was revived from 1933 to feature on the obverse of the coins. Miley Busiek created a unique image of the American bald eagle for the reverse of the coins and that design was used through June 2021.
In July 2021, the US Mint changed the reverse design, a first in the history of the series. The change was chosen for 2021 as it was the 35th anniversary of the series. Now that the anniversary celebration is over, 2022 marks the first full year in which the new bald eagle image will feature on the coins.
Lady Liberty is on the obverse of 2022 1/4 oz Gold Eagles. This design was last issued on an American coin in 1933 when the final $20 Gold Double Eagles were released into circulation. The design was originally created in 1907 by Augustus Saint-Gaudens for the same series. It features Liberty in front-facing relief with a torch in one hand and an olive branch in the other.
An American bald eagle is found on the reverse side of the 2022 American Gold Eagle. This new design comes from Jennie Norris and was submitted to the United States Mint for consideration through the Artistic Infusion Program. The design shows a bald eagle in left-profile relief with exceptional levels of detail in the plumage and other features of the bird.
These 2022 1/4 oz American Gold Eagles have Mint State 70 grades and plastic slabs for shipping. Coins in this condition are considered perfect specimens with full, original mint luster and no detractions. The Early Release label is for coins the NGC receives from the mint for grading within 30 days of release.
